Luang Prabang is about a 45 minute plane ride from the capital of Vientiane. It is one of the World Heritage sites of the World with the number of Wats (“Temples”) in such a small place!
In itself, Laos is a country that still exudes the mysticism of the east. Having been occupied by the French, the difference in the culture and it’s combination has creates a very quaint atmosphere.
The place is really a backpacker’s haven with tons of cheap inns and food places to go to. The place is small so you can pretty much walk the entire town. In that trip 3 day stay, we went to see at least 2 dozen wats, each with their own charm and story but honestly, you can only see so many wats! When that happens, just cross the street and you sit down and relax in a French cafĂ© with free wifi, but then again, soon as you get online, you ask yourself, why am I getting online again when I’m at such a quaint and charming place lost in time! (One place in particular is called Joma’s which serves some really fantastic yoghurt!)
Literally after a few days in, you will feel that you’re so far from the hustle and bustle of the city that it’s simply just a wonderful escape to head off to.
What To Do:
1. Lounge Bar. Sunset. Cheap Beer – Beer Lao!. Good Friends or Significant Other. 2. Every evening, the main road turns into a night market where you get hand-crafted bags, scarves, trinkets and what not. 3. Every morning at day break, all of the monks come out of the wats and the entire city turns into a parade of monks where tourists and locals give food alms (sticky rice mostly) to all of the monks.
Where To Eat:
Joma! French Cafe
How to get there:
Two options:
A. By Bus from Vientiane (11 hours) – If you’re not in a rush, it’s a good trip with a stop over in the middle.
B. By Airplane from Vientiane (45 mins)
